Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) and other alternative payment methods (APMs) let shoppers pay in installments or through local wallets and payment schemes instead of a standard card. NewStore does not natively support BNPL or APMs. You can offer these methods to in-store shoppers through your Adyen integration.
There are two ways a shopper can use an alternative payment method in the store:
At the Adyen payment terminal, by scanning a QR code displayed on the terminal. This is the recommended approach.
Via NewStore Checkout (Adyen Pay by Link), by scanning the QR code displayed in Associate App. However, both Adyen and NewStore strongly recommend against using this method for installment-based BNPL methods.
Prerequisites
You must have Adyen set up as your payment service provider before you can offer alternative payment methods. See Integrating Adyen.
Adyen controls the specific methods you can offer and where they are available. Confirm the available methods and their requirements with your Adyen account team.
Paying with alternative payment methods at the terminal
NewStore supports Adyen's Initiate from Terminal approach for QR code wallets. The shopper selects an alternative payment method on the Adyen terminal and completes payment on their own phone. Adyen lists the methods supported for QR code wallets in its payment methods documentation.
The flow for these transactions is mapped below:
The associate sends the amount due from Associate App to the Adyen terminal.
The terminal prompts the shopper for payment and displays a QR code icon.
The associate or shopper taps the QR code icon to display the list of supported payment methods.
This list is configured in Adyen. The shopper selects a payment method.
The terminal displays the QR code for that method.
The shopper scans the QR code with their phone.
The shopper is directed to the payment page for that selected payment method.
The shopper completes payment on their phone, and Adyen processes it.
Associate App receives a confirmation that the payment is complete, and the order is placed and routed for fulfillment.
Paying with alternative payment methods via NewStore Checkout
NewStore Checkout uses Adyen Pay by Link to present a QR code in Associate App through the Customer Phone payment option. If you enable alternative payment methods in your Adyen Customer Area or NewStore Payments Dashboard, a shopper can select one of them on the hosted payment page.
Important
NewStore and Adyen recommend against using installment-based BNPL methods through NewStore Checkout. These methods can introduce significant delays in payment confirmation and capture, which can cause payment requests to fail. For details, see the note in Setting up NewStore Checkout with Adyen Pay By Link.
To offer alternative payment methods in the store, use the pay via terminal approach instead.
Using Klarna and Clearpay
Important
NewStore does not support Klarna as a payment method through Adyen.
Klarna requires the full contents of the cart, including every line item, to be sent with the payment request. NewStore sends only the amount due for the cart, so Klarna cannot complete the payment. Any payment method that requires the full cart contents is affected by the same limitation.
Shoppers can still use Klarna or Clearpay in store through a virtual card, regardless of whether the method is available directly:
The shopper adds the provider's virtual card, such as the Klarna card or Clearpay card, to their digital wallet.
At checkout, the shopper taps their phone at the Adyen terminal and selects that card from their wallet.
The terminal processes the transaction as a standard card payment. The shopper manages their installment options in the provider's app.
Enabling alternative payment methods
Important
You must enable and configure alternative payment methods in Adyen, not in NewStore. Available methods, regional support, and capture behavior are determined by Adyen and can change. NewStore does not control any of these factors.
Enable the methods you want to offer in your Adyen Customer Area, or in the NewStore Payments Dashboard if you use NewStore Payments.
Confirm which methods are available for QR code wallets, and their associated requirements, with your Adyen account team.
Make sure the relevant payment option is enabled for the store. See Configuring payment options.
